The Group of Solid Mechanics and Structural Impact, GMSIE, from University of São Paulo, Brazil, started in 1998, when M. Alves designed and built an impact tower of 20kJ with the support of British Council, FAPESP and CNPq. This group seems to be the first in Brazil fully dedicated to the study of impact events and it remains so.

The group had in the beginning the participation of Drs. K. Stravopoulos and J.B. Aguiar. In 2001, with the formation of a new department, Mechatronics and Mechanical Systems Engineering, the group was strengthened by the participation of C.A.N. Dias, L. Driemeier and T.A.H. Coelho.

The formation of GMSIE was supported day by day by three Master students, Sérgio Teramoto, Roberto Oshiro e Felipe Galina, who worked intensively during 2002-2004, and by Giancarlo Micheli, who worked since his first year in the under-grad course till his Ph.D., in the period 2000-2008.

More recently, Renato Yamassaki, who works at GMSIE since his first year undergrad course, 2005, and is now doing his Ph.D., was most important in establishing the computational infra-structure of GMSIE. Rafael Moura brought to GMSIE, in the period 2005-2010 with his Ph.D., important contributions in the field of polymers, dynamic tests and digital image correlation. Renato Neves, 2005-2010, worked with tires analysis, while Rafael Celeguini introduced to GMSIE investigations in composite materials. Leonardo Mazzariol, in 2010, is investigating ship collision and Miguel Gonzales is being most important in the general coordination of the laboratory activities.

During this period, GMSIE has grown to a large laboratory where research activities go side by side with teaching and consulting.  Indeed, the group has a lecture room, a room for researchers and different areas for experiments. As for 2008, it has incorporated a new area where products and mechanisms design, under the coordination of T.A.H. Coelho are developed.

GMSIE comprises now four lecturers, some 20 undergrad and post grad students, one engineer, and has attracted funds well over 1M Euros. The group has published more than 100 papers in conferences and international journals.

GMSIE has close cooperation with the University of Dortmund, Germany, University of Trodenheim Norway, and University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.
